Flight tracker vs flight log: what's the difference?

Search for a way to see every flight you've ever taken and you'll mostly find flight trackers. They're useful, but they answer a different question.

A flight tracker tells you where a plane is right now. A flight log is a record of the flights you've already taken: where you went, when, and how far it all adds up to. Waymarka is a flight log and travel pin map. It doesn't track flights live and doesn't send alerts.

What a flight tracker does

A flight tracker follows flights that are in the air now or coming up soon. People use one to:

  • see where an aircraft is on a live map
  • check for delays, cancellations and schedule changes
  • watch for gate changes and updated departure or arrival times
  • get alerts on travel day, or know when someone's plane has landed

Once the flight is over, a tracker has done its job. It isn't built to keep your personal history year after year.

What a flight log does

A flight log looks backwards. It's your own record of flights you've taken, kept for as long as you like. People use one to:

  • keep every past flight in one place instead of scattered across airline apps, emails and spreadsheets
  • see all their routes drawn on a world map
  • add up their totals: distance, time in the air, airports and countries
  • remember the details: airline, aircraft, seat and a note about the trip

Which one do you need?

  • Want to know if your flight tomorrow is on time? You need a tracker.
  • Want to know how many countries you've flown to, or see every route you've ever flown? You need a log.

Many frequent flyers use both: a tracker on travel day, then a log afterwards to keep the record. If you've been looking for the second one, read on.

How Waymarka works as a flight log

  • A map of everything: each flight you log is drawn as a route on a world map. You can also pin cities as Visited, Planned, Living now, Native or Not visited. See your flight map.
  • Easy to add flights: type one in with just the date and two airports, scan a boarding pass barcode with your camera (read in memory, no photo saved, and you confirm the year), or import a CSV spreadsheet, a myFlightradar24 export or a Flighty export.
  • Your stats: the Stats tab adds up distance (in kilometres), time in the air, airports, countries, and your top airlines and aircraft. See flight stats.
  • Your data stays yours: export every flight as a CSV at any time from Settings → Data and privacy, on any plan.

It runs in any modern browser, and you can sign up with Google or email.
